Castle Construction

Medieval castle construction was a monumental feat of engineering that transformed raw landscapes into near-impregnable fortresses. Builders relied entirely on manual labor, localized raw materials, and highly organized craftsman guilds to erect structures designed to withstand centuries of warfare and weathering.

Site Selection and Layout:
Historically, builders positioned castles on naturally defensible locations like hilltops, cliffs, or river bends to maximize visibility and control the surrounding area. You would establish a master plan, typically overseen by a master mason who could lay out the footprint using basic surveying tools like plumb lines and a compass. Laborers excavated deep trenches down to solid bedrock to prevent the massive stone walls from settling or being undermined by enemy tunnels.

Engineering Tools:
Treadwheel Cranes: Giant wooden "squirrel cages" powered by workers walking inside them, utilizing a system of pulleys to hoist multi-ton stone blocks high onto the rising walls.
Putlog Scaffolding: Rather than building scaffolding from the ground up, timbers were inserted into temporary "putlog holes" left in the active masonry layers. As the wall grew, the lower scaffolding was disassembled and moved upward.
Geometric Measurement: Craftsmen used long knotted ropes for layout measurements, wooden right-angles, and a simple triangle with a suspended plumb bob to ensure walls were perfectly level.

Primary Building Materials:
Stone & Brick: Sandstone, limestone, or granite were quarried locally using iron wedges and sledgehammers, then carted to the site by oxen.
Lime Mortar: A flexible, "breathable" mixture of water, sand, and quicklime (produced by burning chalk or limestone) that allowed the massive walls to flex without cracking.
Oak Timber: Used extensively for internal floor frames, massive roof trusses, defensive hoarding, and heavy gatehouse drawbridges. Construction Techniques: Workers would extract the stone using iron wedges and sledgehammers. Walls were erected using the putlog scaffolding technique, where wooden beams were inserted directly into holes left in the masonry, allowing platforms to rise with the structure. Mortar—a mixture of sand, lime, and water—was applied between the hand-shaped stones for durability.

Fortification:
Curtain Walls: High, thick stone walls designed to withstand battering rams or siege engines.
Crenelated Parapets: The indented, tooth-like tops of the walls that provided cover for archers.
Gatehouses: The most heavily fortified entry point, featuring iron portcullises, murder holes, and drawbridges.
Wall Towers: Placed at corners and intervals to provide flanking fire.
The Keep (Donjon): The central stronghold of the castle, which served as the lord’s residence and the ultimate refuge if the outer walls were breached. It was usually self-contained, featuring its own well, storage rooms, and living quarters.
Interior Detailing: Contrary to the bare, gray stone structures often seen in ruins today, medieval castles were typically colorful. Builders would finish interior walls with plaster, bright paints using natural pigments, tapestries, and decorative tile floors.n
