Castle arrow loops—also known as arrow slits, loopholes, or balistraria—are narrow vertical openings cut into the stone walls and towers of medieval fortifications. Their primary purpose was to allow defenders to safely fire arrows or crossbow bolts outward at attackers while remaining almost entirely protected behind thick stone walls.
How Arrow Loops Worked:
While the vertical slit on the outside was made thin to prevent enemy arrows from getting through, the inside of the wall was cut away to create a much wider, hollowed-out space known as an embrasure. This structural design offered several major advantages:
Superior Protection: The small exterior aperture provided attackers with an incredibly small target, making it nearly impossible for return fire to hit the defender.
Wide Field of Fire: The wider interior recess (embrasure) allowed the archer to move comfortably, step close to the wall, and angle their shots to cover a broad arc.
Elimination of Blind Spots: Architects carefully angled the sides of the stone so that defenders could fire along the length of the wall (flanking fire) to protect vulnerable areas and gates.
Common Variations:
Over time, as military tactics and weapons evolved, arrow loop designs were adapted to suit different needs:
Vertical Slits: The simplest and most common early design, designed specifically for standing longbowmen to aim up and down.
Cruciform (Cross-Shaped) Loops: These featured a horizontal slit added to the vertical one, which gave defenders a wider horizontal field of vision and was particularly effective for crossbowmen.
"Fishtail" Base: Some loops widened at the very bottom, giving the defender a clear view of the base of the wall to stop attackers trying to place ladders or lay explosives.
Gun Loops: Following the introduction of gunpowder, many arrow slits were modified to include circular holes at the bottom, allowing defenders to utilize early firearms and small cannons.
