A castle moat is a deep, broad perimeter trench designed to strengthen fortress defense by blocking enemy access, preventing siege machinery from reaching the walls, and stopping tunneling tactics. It can be filled with water or left dry.

Core Structural Features:
Dimensions: Typically ranged from 5 to 40 feet deep and tens of feet wide; some historical examples spanned nearly 50 feet across.

Water Supply Systems: Water-filled moats required advanced hydraulic planning, using diverted nearby rivers, streams, or upstream reserve ponds to maintain a stable water level.

Dry Design and Obstacles: Dry moats featured steep, slippery slopes designed to trap attacking foot soldiers in a kill zone, often enhanced with sharp wooden stakes, thorny brush, or hidden pits.

Crossing Points: Linked to the Gatehouse via a mobile Drawbridge or lifting platform that could be retracted during a siege.

Strategic Military Functions:
Siege Engine Inhibition: Kept heavy battering rams and mobile siege towers from rolling directly against the stone curtain walls.

Anti-Mining Defense: Prevented attackers from digging secret tunnels (mines) beneath the base of the walls to cause structural collapse, as water-filled trenches would flood or destabilize the tunnels.

Ranged Combat Zone: Forced enemies into exposed, slow movement while defenders fired arrows and hurled projectiles from the safety of the battlements.
