Portcullis

A portcullis is a heavy, vertically sliding defensive gate made of a latticed grid of heavy oak and iron, set into stone grooves inside a castle gateway. It could be dropped instantly by a single guard to trap and block enemies.
Structure and Materials:
Grid Design: Built with a criss-cross wooden or iron lattice that provided visibility for guards while remaining structurally rigid.
Composition: Framework primarily constructed from thick, seasoned oak beams, heavily reinforced, plated, or shod with iron strips to prevent cutting or burning.
Spiked Base: Fitted with sharp metal spikes along the bottom edge designed to pierce armor or crush anything caught beneath when dropped.
Operation and Mechanism:
Vertical Grooves: Slid smoothly up and down within deep vertical stone slots (jambs) carved into the gateway walls.
Winches and Pulleys: Connected via heavy chains or ropes to a counterweight and pulley system operated from a dedicated guard chamber above the gateway.
Emergency Release: Maintained a quick-release mechanism enabling defenders to sever or release the restraint, causing the gate to slam down under its own massive weight during a surprise breach.
Tactical Defense Use:
The Trapping Zone: Castles often installed two sequential portcullises. Defenders would let an enemy group enter the gateway, drop the inner gate, and then drop the outer gate to isolate the attackers.
Combined Kill Zones: Trapped attackers became sitting targets exposed to overhead "murder holes" (for dropping hot sand, stones, or burning material) and flanking arrowslits.
